Theresa Whelan was interviewed about the Defense Department’s AFRICOM and the strategic importance of Africa to the U.S. and the world. AFRICOM will be a unified combat command for all of Africa, beginning September 30, 2008. Africa previously has been divided between the European Command and two others. Topics included the role of Africa in the post-Cold War world, the threat of al Qaeda and terrorism, and interfacing with the State Department.
