U.S. Secretary of State James Baker held a news conference to discuss recent events in the Soviet Union and the Baltic states. Earlier in the week, President Bush had announced the official U.S. recognition of the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, former satellite states of the Soviet Union. The news conference was Secretary Baker’s first since the failed coup in the Soviet Union and his meeting with NATO leaders in Brussels, Belgium. Secretary Baker said he was going to travel to the Soviet Union the following week to attend a human rights conference and speak with Soviet leaders on U.S. policy concerning the Baltic states and the disintegration of the central Soviet government. He said U.S. policy maintained that the future of the Soviet Union would be up to the people of the Soviet Union themselves, but the U.S. also supports existing borders, both internal and external in the Soviet Union. close
