Members of the House Ethics committee held a news conference to announce its plans to investigate the finances of the House of Representatives bank. Congress previously voted to shut down the bank, which handled accounts solely for members of the House of Representatives, after it was revealed to the media that several members of Congress routinely bounced checks drawn on their funds in the bank, which were then routinely covered by the bank. The General Accounting Office determined that in a one year period, approximately 8,000 bad checks were written by House members. The House Ethics committee planned to investigate the records of the bank to determine whether activities of certain House members in regard to their accounts in the bank were unethical. close
