Felipe Gonzalez, the prime minister of Spain, opened the Middle East peace conference in Madrid with a speech honoring the countries participating in the conference. He called for less confrontation and greater cooperation between the countries in the Middle East. President Bush talked about “territorial compromise” as essential for peace. He also called upon the Arab nations to meet territorial concessions from Israel with a comprehensive settlement for peace. Soviet President Gorbachev addressed the conference, asking Arab nations and Israel to end the violent practices of their past. close
