Representatives of civil rights organizations opposed to the confirmation of Judge Clarence Thomas offered testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. John Buchanan, representing People for the American Way, spoke about Judge Thomas' hostility to Supreme Court precedents and to the U.S. Congress. Other witnesses talked about the nominee’s low rating by the American Bar Association. Julius Chambers, of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, expressed his opinion that Judge Thomas would reverse previous Supreme Court decisions and undermine progress made for African Americans and other underprivileged groups. close
