North American Free Trade Agreement

U.S. President Bush and Canadian Prime Minister Mulroney held a news conference outside the White House to talk about U.S.-Canadian trade relations. Prime Minister Mulroney sharply criticized actions by the U.S. which retaliate for actions, rather than negotiate for solutions, in matters of international trade. The previous week, the U.S. Commerce Department raised its tariff in response to timber subsidies by the Canadian government. Prime Minister Mulroney responded to some questions in French, which went untranslated. President Bush also responded to questions concerning the remarks of Vice President Quayle made the previous day concerning the television sitcom “Murphy Brown.” The vice president had criticized the program for “mocking the importance of fathers,” and glorifying single motherhood as “just another lifestyle choice.” President Bush said families provided the best environment for raising children.
