The subcommittee held the first day of hearings to consider whether to impeach Alcee Hastings, U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Florida, based on allegations of bribery and perjury. After some discussion among subcommittee members about the process of taking sworn testimony from Judge Hastings, the Judge made an opening statement. John Doar, former Special Counsel of the Investigating Committee of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, then answered questions about the allegations against Judge Hastings. Mr. Doar had previously investigated the allegations in a criminal case against the Judge.
