Sheryll Cashin talked about her book, The Agitator’s Daughter: A Memoir of Four Generations of One Extraordinary African-American Family (PublicAffairs; July 7, 2008), which recounts the legacy of political activism in her family. Her great grandfather, Herschel Cashin, a Republican legislator in the South, supported political enfranchisement for African-Americans during Reconstruction. Her father, Dr. John Cashin, Jr., founded the National Democratic Party of Alabama, an independent Democratic party in opposition to George Wallace’s Dixiecrats. Following her remarks, Ms. Cashin responded to questions from the audience.

Sheryll Cashin is a law professor at Georgetown University. She is the author of Failures of Integration: How Race and Class are Undermining the American Dream, a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for non-fiction in 2005. close
