Eric Walther talked about Congress in 1860. Prior to the Civil War, secessionists in the thirty-sixth Congress worked actively to undermine the Union, both in Congress and around the South. Professor Walther showed slides during his presentation, after which he responded to questions from members of the audience.

“'Shatter this Accursed Union': The Fire-Eaters in Congress in 1860” was the second session of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society (USCHS) Spring Symposium, “Secession and War Come to Washington,” which was part of the series “The National Capital in a Nation Divided: Congress and the District of Columbia Confront Sectionalism and Slavery.” It was held on Friday, May 7, 2010, in the Capitol Visitors Center.
