Diane Abbott, who has been a Labour Party member of the House of Commons for 23 years, was the first black woman to be elected to Parliament. Since a new government took over earlier in 2010, the Labour Party named Diane Abbot as Shadow Minister for Public Health. In that capacity, she is the spokesperson for the opposition on matters of public health. She talked about the government’s plans for cuts in many programs, as well as her experiences as a minority in Parliament. She also compared and contrasted the politics and parliamentary system of government in Britain to the system of separation of powers in the United States.

During the interview video clips were shown of an interview she did for C-SPAN on July 13, 1994, and a speech at the Labour Party Conference in the summer of 2010. Other pictures and video were shown in the background. close
