Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Martin Dempsey briefed reporters. Secretary Panetta said that Congress had a “great deal of critical work” to do during the lame duck session. He challenged them to avoid sequestration, pass defense authorization and cybersecurity bills, and to work together to solve national problems. He also addressed the September 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. He admitted that U.S. forces were on heightened alert that day but said that did not know the situation on the ground. close
