Military and Energy Department officials testified on nuclear security. The hearing focused on security improvements and challenges with Energy Department nuclear facilities after the July 28, 2012, security breach at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where nuclear material is produced and stored. Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman called the security breach “unacceptable and a wake-up call” but said U.S. nuclear material is very well defended. Issues raised included accountability and structural and cultural concerns with the Energy Department and its National Nuclear Security Administration. close
