Bob Maynard, editor and publisher of the Oakland Tribune newspaper, spoke to the Commonwealth Club of California on the 1992 election. Mr. Maynard discussed the national and regional “fault lines” of the nation’s electorate, reflected in the strategies of the presidential candidates, including the regional, racial, and class oriented “fault lines” of America. He described the rhetoric of the 1992 Republican National Convention as being a “declaration of what is essentially class warfare,” and went on to discuss the politics of race, class and generational divisions in the 1992 presidential race.
