Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus briefed reporters on the results of the department’s internal security review after the September 16, 2013, shooting at the Washington Navy Yard when 12 employees were killed. Recommendations included reducing the the number of security clearances by 10 percent. Other officials outlined recommendations from external reviews, including that security should be built from within rather than the outdated perimeter security approach that had been used. close
