President Bush spoke to the Economic Club of Detroit to announce the release of his economic agenda for his second term in office. In a speech that had been billed as a “major economic address” by the White House, the president criticized the tax and redistributive policies of Democratic presidential nominee Gov. Bill Clinton and lauded his agenda as the means to maintain America’s economic predominance in the global economy. He discussed his policies concerning taxes, trade, government spending, and reforms of the nation’s financial system. The president proposed cutting the budget for Congress by one third, and said he would similarly cut the executive budget by one third if Congress did so. He also proposed a one percent tax cut across the board for all Americans. Following his prepared remarks, President Bush responded to written questions from members of the audience. close
