The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument in Heien v. North Carolina, docket number 13-604. At issue in the case was whether a police officer’s “mistake of law” was legal justification under the Fourth Amendment for a traffic stop and subsequent search.

The court on December 14, 2014, ruled that a police officer’s reasonable mistake of law can provide the individualized suspicion required by the Fourth Amendment to justify a traffic stop based upon that understanding. close
