U.S. Army veteran Salvatore Conte talked about his experiences in the Korean War and as a prisoner of war (POW). Private First Class Conte was captured by the Chinese and forced to live in solitary confinement for eight months. The Korean war took place from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. During that time, 5.8 million Americans served in the U.S. Armed Forces and 33,686 were killed in action.

The interview was conducted for the Korean War Veterans Digital Memorial by Jongwoo Han, president of the Korean War Legacy Foundation.

The Korean War Veterans Digital Memorial is an online archive of the memories and experiences of the soldiers who fought what is sometimes called “The Forgotten War.” Along with digital images of the photographs and artifacts donated by veterans, the archive includes a collection of oral history interviews that provide eyewitness accounts of the Korean War.interviews that provide eyewitness accounts of the Korean War. close
