Panelists talked about the issue of black poverty in America 150 years after the creation of the Freedman’s Savings Bank.

Incorporated by Congress on March 3, 1865, the Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company, also known as the Freedman’s Savings Bank, was created to spur the economic development of the newly-emancipated African American population in the post-Civil War era. Despite significant financial contributions from figures such as Frederick Douglass, the Freedman’s Savings Bank failed in 1874, leaving tens of thousands of depositors in financial ruin. close
