The Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives of the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing on the transfer of fetal tissue. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Ben Sasse (R-NE) and former attorneys for anti-abortion and pro-abortion rights groups testified on determining whether abortion clinics were illegally making a profit from fetal tissue. Democratic members of the committee argued that the investigation was an attempt to restrict women’s health care. Republicans said that evidence supported that at least one abortion clinic profited from the sale of aborted fetal organs. The panel within the House Energy and Commerce Committee was formed in 2015 in response to released videos of Planned Parenthood practices to investigate abortion practices and policies regarding fetal tissue, its cost, and how it is obtained. close
