Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon began the daily briefing discussing his recent trip to Caracas to assist in the mediation of talks between the Venezuelan government and opposition leaders aimed at ending the country’s political and economic crisis. Then Spokesperson John Kirby briefed the reporters and responded to their questions on a number of international topics. He announced that Secretary of State John Kerry would travel to a research station in Antarctica in the next week to meet with scientists about climate change. He would be the highest-ranking U.S. official ever to visit the continent. close
