State and local education officials testified at a House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing on the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act, the 2015 law that changed the way the federal Department of Education oversees state boards of education and local school districts. The witnesses talked about various successes and struggles in complying with the law’s requirements, and responded to questions from the committee about ways the federal Department of Education could do a better job in implementing the law. Democrats on the committee also pressed its chair, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), to invite Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to testify on the law’s implementation, a request with which Foxx said she would comply. close
