The House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on the proposed 30 percent cut to the State Department’s budget. Members questioned Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan on the department’s restructuring efforts and a broad range of diplomatic priorities. Secretary Sullivan acknowledged the concerns of many members about the department’s hiring freeze, pending nominations, and low employee morale. Other questions focused on foreign policy priorities in North Korea, Iran and Myanamar. Later, Mr. Sullivan responded to questions about President Trump’s latest tweet on North Korea and the USAID teaming up with FEMA to assist in recovery efforts in Puerto Rico and other islands affected by Hurricane Maria. close
