The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Christie v. NCAA. The case concerns whether a federal statute, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA), which prohibits sports wagering in most state, violates the Tenth Amendment’s prohibition of the federal government from commandeering states into enforcing federal law. The case was brought by Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ), who sought to bring legalized sports betting to his state. The nation’s four major professional sports leagues joined the NCAA as respondents to uphold the federal law prohibiting sports gambling. The court consolidated the case with N.J. Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association v. NCAA.

On May 14, 2018, the Court ruled that the 1992 law was unconstitutional. close
