In 1841, Solomon Northup, a free-born African American, was kidnapped and sold into slavery until his rescue. Historian David Fiske chronicled Solomon’s life in Saratoga Springs before his kidnapping and the writing of his memoir, 12 Years a Slave.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2017 LCV Cities Tour” in Saratoga Springs, New York, from September 20-27, to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Charter cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2. close
