Two House Energy and Commerce subcommittees held a joint hearing on the corporate average fuel economy program and greenhouse gas emissions standards for vehicles. Representatives from the groups Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, Global Automakers, Union of Concerned Scientists and National Automobile Dealers Association testified on how those standards were affecting the industry. One of the challenges mentioned in testimony was that the standards were created and governed by two different agencies, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A member of the committee, Representative Fred Upton (R-MI), had introduced a bring the differing standards into agreement. close
