The Supreme Court heard oral argument in United States v. Microsoft Corporation, a case dealing with warrant compliance and email contents stored abroad. The federal government got a warrant to require email service provider Microsoft to turn over information to investigators from an email account they believed was used for drug trafficking. Microsoft refused. The government obtained the warrant via the Stored Communications Act, which allows it to do so with probable cause to believe a crime was being committed. Microsoft argued the Stored Communications Act does not apply in this case because the emails of interest are stored outside of the U.S.

On April 17, 2018, the Court dismissed this case after Congress approved and President Donald Trump signed the CLOUD Act (Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data). close
