Senators Rand Paul (R-KY), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Steve Daines (R-MT), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) held a press conference on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which authorizes the intelligence community to access communications of non-U.S. persons outside of the United States for foreign intelligence purposes. The Senate was considering reauthorization of the program for an additional six years after the House approved the measure. While the senators emphasized the importance of the program for U.S. national security, they took issue with its scope, saying it allowed innocent Americans' data to unlawfully become swept up in intelligence probes. The senators called for open debate on the measure and for the ability to offer amendments to address their concerns with the program. close
