General Edmund Pettus, the namesake for the bridge at the beginning of the route from Selma to Montgomery, was a Civil War General and two-term U.S. Senator from Alabama. John Giggie, University of Alabama professor, talked about the role the bridge played in Selma before and after the battle for civil rights. Representative Terri Sewell (D-AL) also spoke about the name of the bridge.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2018 LCV Cities Tour” in Selma, Alabama, from April 21-27 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Charter cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2. close
