Officials from the Agriculture Department and the U.S. Trade Representative Office testified at a hearing on the impact of U.S. trade policy on American agriculture. Senators asked for updates on the Trump administration’s efforts to reach new trade deals with Canada, Mexico, China, and Japan, among others. Senators also talked about their home states' agricultural exports and how escalating trade tensions had negatively impacted price points, stability, and the ability to access foreign markets. A number of senators questioned the efficacy of eschewing multilateral trade pacts in favor of bilateral deals, which they said were taking too long to complete at the expense of farmers and producers. close
