In a vote of 50-48 vote, the Senate confirmed Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be an associate justice on the Supreme Court. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who voted “no” on cloture and was the only Republican to oppose the nominee, used a Senate procedure called “pairing” to vote “present” in the final vote. She did so as a courtesy to Senator Steve Daines (R-MT), who was attending his daughter’s wedding that day. The procedure allows two senators who are voting in opposite ways to “pair” their votes, allowing one of the senators to be absent and causing the vote to be the same margin as would have been without the absence.

Vice President Mike Pence was present for the final vote in the event of a tie. close
