The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) hosted a discussion on the political situation in Venezuela, just as President Nicolas Maduro was sworn-in for a second term, which dozens of Latin American countries and others denounced as illegitimate. Former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela William Brownfield made the case that Mr. Maduro’s dictatorship and regime wertr similar to what he called the “Adolf Hitler model,” and said Maduro “self-inaugurated” himself back into power. Panelists gave recommendations for how the U.S. and others should respond, and suggested diplomatic tools which would apply the most pressure on Maduro’s government. close
