Fifty years ago, on February 24, 1969, the Supreme Court decided in Tinker v. Des Moines that students do not lose their First Amendment rights on school grounds. The court ruled in favor of three Des Moines, Iowa, students who were suspended for wearing black arm bands to school to protest the Vietnam War, violating local school policies. The State Historical Society of Iowa marked the 50th anniversary of the decision with an event featuring remarks by Mary Beth Tinker and her brother, John, co-petitioners in the case. close
