The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Lamone v. Benisek, a case on partisan gerrymandering. Republican voters in Maryland challenged the 2011 6th Congressional District map, saying it unfairly shifted political advantage to the Democratic Party and violated their First Amendment rights to representation and association. The map was redrawn after the 2010 Census when Maryland had a Democratic governor and a Democratic majority in the legislature. Republican Representative Roscoe Bartlett had held the seat since 1993 but was defeated in 2012 by Democrat John Delaney.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that partisan gerrymandering is not a matter for the judicial branch to take up. close
