Following opening remarks, Andrea Thompson, the undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, took part in a Carnegie Endowment for International Peace discussion on nuclear policy. Most of her discussion with a moderator focused on U.S. efforts to continue anti-proliferation talks with Russia following the mutual withdrawal by the two countries from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which had eliminated more than 2,600 short and medium-range missiles in its first four years of enforcement. She also took questions from the audience on the U.S.-Russia relationship as well as other non-proliferation efforts around the globe. close
