Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced a change to U.S. policy toward Cuba that will allow U.S. citizens to sue companies profiting off of property seized from them by the Cuban government. The decision was scheduled to be implemented May 2, 2019, and an assistant secretary for the State Department said the change could result in legal claims worth billions of dollars. The law allowing such legal claims, the Helms-Burton Act, had been suspended by presidents since its creation in 1996. close
