The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Kelly v. United States. The case concerns the federal corruption convictions of two people involved in the 2013 New Jersey “Bridgegate” scandal in which two lanes onto the George Washington Bridge, from Jersey City going into New York City, were shut down for four days, causing major traffic chaos for residents and city officials. The two people at the center of this case, Bridget Kelly (former deputy chief of staff to then-Governor Chris Christie) and William Baroni Jr. (former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey), were both convicted of several federal charges including fraud and conspiracy for their roles. Originally, officials cited a study for the lane closures, but later the real reason for the closing was political payback against the Fort Lee mayor who refused to endorse Governor Christie for his reelection bid. close
