History and environmental studies Professor Brian Black detailed how World War I led to a dramatic world-wide increase in the production and use of fossil fuels, especially petroleum. Professor Black also discussed the experiences of a young U.S. Army Colonel named Dwight Eisenhower during a 1919 cross-country motor convoy and how it influenced his later support for a national highway system.

The National World War I Museum and Memorial co-hosted this event with the Linda Hall Library, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home. close
