The House Oversight and Reform Committee held a hearing on voting rights in low income and minority communities. Witnesses included the president of Repairers of the Breach, civil and voting rights attorney Marcia Johnson-Blanco, and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)founding members Diane Nash and Thomas Jenkins. They discussed such forms of voter suppression as strict voter photo identification laws, elimination of early voting, closing of polling places in minority communities, racial gerrymandering, lack of paper ballots, excessive voter purges, and long lines. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) asked the witnesses a series of questions equating Second Amendment rights to voting rights, finally asking if the right to keep and bear arms should be restored to non-violent offenders who have served their time. Mr. Jenkins in response said that “this shouldn’t be a bait-and-switch to have a discussion about arms when the issue is voting rights.” close
