The Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum was founded in 1841 and would become the largest mental institution in the world. In her book, Administrations of Lunacy: Racism and the Haunting of American Psychiatry at the Milledgeville Asylum, Mab Segrest looked at who was sent there and why, and how patients were treated, especially in the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow eras. The Atlanta History Center hosted the discussion. close
