The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Uzuegbunam v. Preczewski, a case concerning a Georgia college student’s civil suit against the school for alleged violations of his free speech and free exercise of religion rights. Chike Uzuegbunam attended Georgia Gwinnett College. In 2006, an officer stopped him as he was handing out religious leaflets in the school’s plaza. The officer said he was violating school policy and could only provide such handouts in the school’s designated speech zones. He applied and succeeded in obtaining a spot in one of the school’s two zones. Again, an officer approached him in the zone saying he was in violation of the student code because he did not reserve the zone for 'open air speaking." He and another student filed a civil rights lawsuit against the public college. The justices were to determine whether the case is moot after the college changed its policies as the lawsuit was pending. close
