Members of the Western Hemisphere Drug Policy Commission testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on a report on the progress of their work in the region and to make recommendations for the future. Congress established the commission in 2017. Some of their recommendations included changes to the U.S. drug certification process, establishing a counter-narcotics law enforcement program, strengthening sanctions against nations involved in illicit drug trafficking, and allowing the State Department to oversee all interagency operations and policies. Several committee members focused on the opioid crisis in the U.S., China’s role in illegal drug production, and decreasing the flow of drugs by first halting financial transactions. close
