Vice President Gore introduced President Clinton by detailing the importance of making the automobile more fuel-efficient. The president spoke about the need to focus research and development on more fuel-efficient engines for U.S. automobiles. Presidents from each of the “big three” U.S. car manufacturers voiced their support for the plan which could revolutionize the U.S. automobile industry. A University of Maryland engineering student, who designed an ethanol-burning engine for a school project, also spoke about the next generation of automobiles. close
