The U.S. Census Bureau released the first results from the 2020 census in a virtual news conference, unveiling the topline population results and changes to congressional apportionment. Ron Jarmin, the bureau’s acting director, said the estimate for the total U.S. population was 331,449,281. This represents a 7.4 percent growth rate from 2010 to 2020, the second slowest growth rate in U.S. history. The South grew the fastest, followed by the West, Northeast and Midwest. California was the most populous state with 39,538,223 people, and the smallest was Wyoming with 576,851 people. The acting director also announced there would be seven congressional seats shifting among 13 states, the smallest change since the current apportionment method was adopted in 1941. Texas was set to gain two House seats, while Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon were to each gain one seat. California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia were each set to lose on close
