The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties held a virtual oversight hearing on the Voting Rights Act. A panel of civil rights and election law experts testified on discriminatory practices used to suppress the vote in minority and low-income communities with focus on recent voting rights laws enacted in some states. Republicans in those states say these laws have been enacted to protect election integrity, while civil rights groups argue they are designed as ways to suppress the vote. They also discussed the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby v. Holder, which struck down Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, deeming it unconstitutional. close
