U.S. Capitol Police Inspector General Michael Bolton testified before the Senate Rules and Administration Committee at a hearing on the role of U.S. Capitol Police and the security failures during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Several topics were discussed, including the recommendation for the Capitol Police force to transition from a traditional into a protective force, how the lack of a department-wide plan impacted the outcome on January 6, the need to combine all Capitol Police departments under one agency, concerns with staffing shortages and retention, and the lack of consistent security and weapons training certification for officers. They also discussed concerns that the department used an outside security contractor for training purposes, whose company website displayed white supremacist imagery. close
