Secretary Yellen in her opening statement also addressed the looming debt limit deadline, warning of “catastrophic” effects if Congress failed to increase the debt limit, and she set an October 18, 2021, deadline of when the U.S. would default on its debt. Chair Powell also warned that inflation in the U.S. could remain high for several months due to the economic recovery from the pandemic.
