Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) announced that he would retire at the end of his eighth term in 2023. Elected in 1974, he was the president pro tempore and longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate in the 117th Congress. He made his announcement at the Vermont’s state capitol in Montpelier. During his remarks, he talked about his nearly 46-plus years in the U.S. Senate, including key accomplishments as chair of the Judiciary, Appropriations, and Agriculture committees. Senator Leahy did not take any questions from reporters after his remarks. close
