The House voted to increase the debt limit by $2.5 trillion until 2023. Along a party-line vote, members also passed a measure holding former Representative Mark Meadows (R-NY), who was former President Trump’s chief of staff, in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Finally, the House passed legislation to set up a State Department office to combat Islamophobia around the globe. Debate was delayed when Republicans took offense to Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s remarks during debate on the Meadows contempt resolution. The chair ruled that Mr. Hoyer’s words were not “unparliamentary.” Later, debate was again delayed when Representative Debbie Dingell (D-MI) asked that Representative Scott Perry’s (R-PA) remarks during debate on the Islamophobia bill be stricken from the record. The chair ruled that Mr. Perry’s words should be “taken down.” close
