During testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on civilian access to military-style assault weapons, Highland Park, Illinois, Mayor Nancy Rotering called on Congress to immediately implement a federal assault weapons ban. Her appearance came as her community was trying to recover from a gunman opening fire at a Fourth of July parade where seven people were killed and dozens injured, including children. Mayor Rotering recounted where she was at the parade that day and getting the call of an active shooter situation. She also described the grief of those who lost family members and described the wounds of those injured. Her testimony garnered applause throughout the hearing. Advocates for and against such a ban also testified. close
