Buffalo, New York, Mayor Byron Brown (D) testified at a House Financial Services subcommittee hearing on the short- and long-term economic impact of mass shootings on local communities. His appearance came after a gunman killed 10 people and injured three others at a Buffalo supermarket in May 2022. Topics included the role of the news media, effects on businesses, the housing market, mental health and the financial support communities need. Other witnesses included Abel Brodeur, University of Ottawa associate professor; Sarah Burd-Sharps, senior director of research at Everytown for Gun Safety; Ruchi Singh, University of Georgia assistant professor; and Brian Ingram, a Minneapolis business owner. close
